On Mission with God

It is 6:30 am on a cold Sunday morning. I watch as several older ladies take their seats and start praying softly, with sincere faces and moving lips. They have come to attend the early morning worship and prayer service at the registered church in Tianjin. I watch them with admiration and think to myself how it always is the older generation that seems to be the example of diligence and faithfulness in prayer. By the time the service finishes, however, the room is filled with about 70 believers of ALL ages, collectively raising their individual voices in worship and prayer.

Training the trainers in Sichuan

Greetings from Yibin, China, where we are currently conducting pastoral training seminars for 10 days. God has opened up the door of opportunity for us to return to this particular church (this is our fourth time here) to keep investing in the brothers and sisters of this region. Over 60 lay pastors (30 from the local church here in Yibin and 30 from the surrounding country side churches) have come for some intense training in Family and Marriage Counseling and Evangelism.

YouthServe: A new ministry initiative launched

Worrying about the future is something we all do. It is also what’s on the minds of thousands of young people. In China high school students worry about the “gaokao”, the standardized college entrance exam. Many parents put tremendous pressure on their child to do well on this exam. The result of this one exam determines whether or not they get into a good top university. And of course the better the university, the better their chance for a good job and with it the potential to earn more money. The pressure is tremendous.

Bishop Ting’s Homegoing and China Partner’s Tribute

Many years ago, while waiting for my flight back to Europe in the airport of the city Bangalore, India, I saw a group of Chinese nearby. Always interested in meeting Chinese, I approached them and was introduced to Bishop K. H. Ting, the patriarch of the Chinese Church. This propelled me at once to the top leadership of the Church in China. For some time I had prayed that the Lord would open the door to a teaching ministry in China, the land of my birth. “Please come visit me the next time you come to Nanjing,” he kindly invited me.

Evangelism...what is it?

“The end product of evangelism is not just to get you out of hell and into heaven, but to get God out of heaven and into you, so that Christ living in your heart might bring God out again into the open where He can be seen.  God has predestined us “to be conformed to the image of His Son” (Rom 8:29) Therefore, when you are finally evangelized and people look at you, they should see the image of the Lord Jesus Christ.  That is what brings glory to God. That is the gospel.” (from The Indwelling Life of Christ by Major W. Ian Thomas)

Youth Ministry in China

“I believe but I do not attend this church because the service is a little boring and there are only old women at this church”. This is what Betty told me, a 17-year-old Chinese high school student in the city of Zigong, Sichuan Province.

Burning for God...

"If you're not on fire for something you won't be able to ignite anyone else." - Joachim Löw, Coach of German National Soccer Team

As I read this quote I thought, “how true.”  How do you motivate others if you are not motivated yourself?  How do you pass on a value that you don’t first cherish yourself?  Passion: it’s a strong drive that comes from within.  It motivates to action; it pushes you forward when you feel like stopping.

Making a Difference Twenty Years Later

I am flying over the Pacific Ocean and watching the small plane slowly inch across the in-flight map displayed on the wall in front of me.  Still eight hours to go.  I am tired but I can’t sleep.  I hardly ever sleep on these long trans-pacific flights to and from China.  Yuck, I know I’ll be completely bushed for the next few days after I arrive home.

From police officer to church planter

I am driving in a rickety mini van (they don’t build these kind in the US; it’s way too small!) on my way to the local church in the countryside of Sichuan.  The driver has just stopped to pick up another woman; she is attending the training we are giving this week.  Sister Liu starts talking; her pitch gets higher with each statement…now she has completely turned around—sitting on her knees—facing us.  She doesn’t care that she is not wear
